There is no ceasefire, but the US does not impose sanctions. "Nice gentleman" has spoken to Trump?

US President Donald Trump said the goal of his conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin was to end the fire in Ukraine. How did it happen that sanctions were not imposed, military actions were not stopped, and Trump is still happy? - in the material of "NI".

The dialogue between the presidents of Russia and the United States was positioned in the West as an act of pressure on the Russian Federation, the result of which should be an almost immediate suspension of military actions in Ukraine. In case of refusal, Moscow was threatened with new unprecedented sanctions.

"The ceasefire, hopefully, will be the day after tomorrow. God bless us all," Donald Trump said shortly before the start of a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin.

Almost simultaneously with this statement by the US President, a comment appeared from White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt. She reported that Trump is "tired" of negotiations to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and is disappointed with both Ukraine and Russia. According to her, he wants a ceasefire and a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

At the same time, the American president managed to talk to Volodymyr Zelensky before calling Vladimir Putin, the Rada TV channel reported. Donald Trump also indicated that he would continue the conversation with him after talking to his Russian counterpart.

After the start of the dialogue between the leaders of the Russian Federation and the United States, as reported by Fox News, American Vice President J.D. Vance stated that Trump would offer Putin economic benefits and warming relations with the entire world, but only in exchange for stopping the “killing of many innocent people.”

Just four hours earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the US Senate had collected enough votes to pass Senator Lindsey Graham's (declared a terrorist in Russia) bill on new sanctions against Russia, even without the participation of the White House. According to Rubio, if there is no progress in negotiations with Moscow, the Senate "will be forced to act." It is worth noting that Graham's bill includes the introduction of duties of up to 500% on imports from countries purchasing Russian hydrocarbons and uranium.

Putin and Trump talks

The conversation between Putin and Trump lasted more than two hours. The Russian president praised the conversation and called it "very constructive." He reported reaching an agreement with the US president on the Russian Federation's proposal and its readiness to work with Ukraine on a memorandum "regarding a possible future peace treaty defining a number of positions."

Putin also noted that contacts between the participants of the meeting and negotiations in Istanbul have resumed and this indicates movement in the right direction.

"The question, of course, is that the Russian and Ukrainian sides should show maximum desire for peace and find compromises that would suit all parties. At the same time, I would like to note that, in general, Russia's position is clear. The main thing for us is to eliminate the root causes of this crisis," the Russian president said.

Following the talks with Putin, Trump said that "some progress" had been made. He assessed the tone and spirit of the conversation as "excellent" and said that it was necessary to agree on the terms of the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict directly between Moscow and Kiev.

"Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiations for a ceasefire and, more importantly, an end to the war. The terms of this will be agreed upon by the two sides, as best they can, because they know the details of the negotiations that no one else will know," the American leader wrote on the Truth Social social network.

The US President also said that immediately after his conversation with Putin, he informed Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb about the imminent start of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.

It is worth noting the statement by the Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry on the crimes of the Kiev regime, Rodion Miroshnik, at the end of the negotiations between the Russian and American presidents, in which he emphasized the agreement of Moscow and Washington on the Russia-Ukraine dialogue format as the optimal one for the settlement.

At the same time, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reported that the time frame for reaching a possible ceasefire agreement between Moscow and Kiev was not discussed in the conversation between Putin and Trump. This was later confirmed by Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, who stated that there was no exact time frame for preparing a memorandum on settlement with Ukraine.

"There are no deadlines and there can't be any. It is clear that everyone wants to do this as quickly as possible, but, of course, the devil is in the details," Peskov noted.

According to Ukrainian media, Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, stated that Kyiv allows for the possibility of signing a memorandum with Moscow leading to an agreement on ending the conflict, and is waiting for the Russian version of the document, but will not withdraw troops from the parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, the DPR and LPR controlled by Ukraine, and will not accept Russia's ultimatums. He also reacted negatively to Russia's demand for a neutral status for Ukraine, citing the fact that "the country's status is written in its Constitution."

Trump's change in rhetoric as a result

After the conversation with Putin, Trump's rhetoric softened as much as possible. The US President called his Russian counterpart "a pleasant gentleman," mentioned Russia's unlimited trade opportunities, joked about Vladimir Putin's great respect for the First Lady, and, most importantly, spoke about the need for a Moscow - Kiev dialogue format to resolve the conflict.

Thus, despite unprecedented pressure and threats of new crushing sanctions before the conversation between Putin and Trump in the event of Russia’s refusal to immediately cease fire, Moscow managed to completely turn the situation in its favor again in just over two hours.
